Does this Child know!?!

Look at his eyes, the facial expression, fingers on his chin, the raised eyebrow!! But how can he? He is only 9 months old! How could he know that his father is one of the hundreds of others who lost their lives in one of the worst industrial disasters in history! His father worked in a Garments Factory located in the 9-storied Rana Plaza that collapsed on April 24 in a matter of minutes.

A little bit of background information would help in putting this child into perspective and so please bear with me!

I am involved in a local NGO (Non-Government Organization) called SOJAG ( of which I was one of the founders and the founding Chairperson as well. Ms. Midori Kon of Ogaki UNESCO Association, Japan has been a longtime friend of SOJAG providing financial assistance for its non-formal education program for the underprivileged and school drop-outs.

When she heard about the Rana Plaza disaster she, along with others in her organization, launched a fund raising campaign. She personally came down to hand over the funds raised to SOJAG and also expressed a desire to meet the families of those who died in that incident and also those who became physically disabled.

We from SOJAG identified 38 such families within Dhamrai Upazila (sub-district) which is its working area. I took her along to visit seven of those families. While talking to the parents or mothers she became so emotional that she could hardly hold back her tears! Almost all these families are in dire straits, both emotionally and financially! The last part of our trip took us to CRP (Center for the Rehabilitation of the Paralyzed CRP-Bangladesh ) where in one ward alone there were 62 admitted victims of the Rana Plaza. All of them suffered loss of limbs and we saw one woman both of the legs of whom had to be amputated!

SOJAG is now in the process of implementing a rehabilitation and livelihood program for these victims with its own resources and with the assistance of Ogaki UNESCO Association of Japan!

The Lucky One!

He is one of the lucky ones to be alive. But his story was so amazing that belied reason and logic! He said he was on the 8th floor and as the building started to shake he was so driven by panic that he just jumped out the window from the 8th floor and landing on a tin roof seven floors down. His whole body was riddled with cuts bruises but his skull, he said, was almost disjointed! He fought for 41 days in the hospital during which time the doctors did a major sewing up work to put his skull back! Amazingly he can walk now and with no visible neurological disorders!

Lucky One!

One of the deadliest events in the history of Bangladesh that many of us remember everyday, no matter where we are, how far we are. The innocent departed souls are in my prayer. I thank you very much for presenting this piece of tragedy in such a significant way. And I salute you for being involved with the rehabilitation process. I believe it is more important to put our sincere effort for the well-being of the distressed ones instead of measuring how successful we are in doing so. Because at the end, an honest effort does not go in vain. Your organization, the lady you mentioned of and yourself are doing that wonderful job. May the Almighty bless you and people at your organization!

This 9 month old baby's portrait reminds me of our huge responsibility for such other children who lost their parents in that disaster. In this connection I just wanted to share this link as I thought that you/your organization might need to contact them in case you see any child like this needs protection and care. The organization in this link is providing supports to such children as part of moral and social responsibilities. I truly believe our joint effort would make a positive change in Bangladesh.

I am back again as I felt that I missed something and yes, I missed the hidden photo of this respected lady in your series. This is one of the weirdest things in new flickr that brought so many tricky aspects to make people confused with, or probably I am not that much expert to deal with these, anyway, please convey my warm regards to this lady who feels sufferings of those helpless people. I just wish this be the last episode in series of man-made disaster in the world's second largest garment industry in Bangladesh.

very sweet capture of mother and child
for 28 years i worked with babies 3-18 months old i can tell you that at 9mo a child knows when something tragic has happened, they pick up the vibes form the mothers and the other people , if they could just talk at that age we would learn so much from them . Wish them all the best, what a tragedy...

I think he probably knows something profound has happened because he will have picked up the vibes
from his mother and other relatives. It is so awful that he has had to experience such overwhelming sadness
at his tender age. This could affect him for the rest of his life.
He already has that 'knowing' look. This is a fantastic portrait of mother and baby and also a message
with huge significance.....future generations must learn from this disaster.

[] Thanks to you too mama. I feel that these children (who lost their either father or mother or both parents) need a lot of support at this moment and our existing system hardly addresses their vulnerability (because of many reasons you know better than me). So whatever resources we have and wherever it is we just need to utilize it for their protection and care. I appreciate the work of your team a lot which has already been reinforced in many of the comments here!

Love, love, love this photo!
Such a sad story! Wish I could change many things that happen in this world. This tragedy would be one of them. So so sorry for your loss, may dad rest in peace. A child should never be forced to remember their parent through the mouths of others and a mother should never be forced to mourn the death of her soul mate. Prayers are with them both.
